About Training and Skills Development BIM provides essential training and skill development for the Irish seafood industry, at its two National Fisheries College of Ireland, mobile coastal training units, in-person workshops and online programmes. We are approved by the Marine Survey Office (MSO) in the Department of Transport to deliver Certificate of Competency (CoC) and Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping (STCW) courses for the fishing industry.
We are also a Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) approved training provider. This means that we can develop and deliver training programmes leading to awards on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ). We currently have QQI validated programmes in Commercial Diving, Fishmonger skills, and fishing vessel engineering skills.
In 2020 the ISO 9001:2015 Certification was awarded to BIM’s National Fisheries College of Ireland for the delivery of Maritime Training and Education. Attaining this internationally recognised standard for quality management systems, ensures that prospective students can be certain any training they receive across all of BIM’s training sites will be of a consistently high standard.
These accredited Seafood Training Programmes and workshops are available across all sectors of the Irish Seafood Industry. Whether you are a novice entrant looking to explore a new career path in the Fishing, Aquaculture or Retail and Processing sector, our courses will allow you to develop key skills in a specific area; we also provide skills development for existing members of the seafood industry to add value, both on an individual professional basis and to the overall seafood business.
Learning Hub In our Learning Hub you can access a series of videos which will cover topics such as, exploring new seafood business ideas, new market opportunities and innovative ways of working.
Expression of Interest: Training Providers for the Seafood Sector BIM invites skilled Training Providers to express interest in joining a new panel to deliver targeted training to the seafood sector. As part of our Skills Strategy for a Sustainable Seafood Sector 2023-2028, BIM is building a Framework of approved trainers in areas such as Finance, HR, Plant Management, Leadership, and Sales. Successful applicants will work directly with BIM’s clients to support growth and business optimisation across the industry.
