Programme Overview Programme Overview

The aim of this programme is to familiarise the learner with the electronic navigation equipment fitted on modern vessels.  Learners will be introduced to the basic theoretical knowledge required to interpret data outputs from speed and distance instruments, depth recording instruments, satellite position fixing systems, electronic charting and shipboard RADAR.  Students will practice the use of this equipment in simulation exercises.

Who is the Programme for

Persons working in the Fishing Industry who are undertaking a Second-Hand Full or Limited Certificate of Competency.

 

Locations

National Fisheries College of Ireland (NFCI), Castletownbere, Co. Cork.

National Fisheries College of Ireland (NFCI), Greencastle, Co. Donegal.

 

Duration

This is a three week (full time) programme.

 

Training Methodology

Classroom based and simulator practice.

 

Certification

Department of Transport Electronic Navigation Systems Certificate (Fishing).

 

Entry Requirements

Learner must have 15 months Qualifying Sea time and must be over 18 years of age.

 

Progression

Successful completion of this programme is one of the requirements for those who wish to obtain a Second-Hand Limited Certificate of Competency and Second-Hand Full Certificate of Competency.

 

Employment Opportunities

This programme forms part of the qualification for Second Hand Limited Skipper and Second-Hand Full Skipper.

 

Assessment

Continuous assessment, with final written & practical examinations.
