Learn essential skills from experienced trainers which include basic net mending, rope work, stability, chartwork, care of the catch, sustainability, food safety and marine engine operations.

An introduction to these skills will allow you to successfully start your career as a deckhand in the fishing industry. A range of sector certificates will also be obtained during the course on successful completion.

Who is this Programme for

School-leavers and/or those with an interest in pursuing a career in the fishing industry.   Not suitable for anyone in fulltime education.

 

Location(s)

National Fisheries College of Ireland (NFCI), Greencastle, Co. Donegal.

Full time six-week programme

 

Training Methodology

Combination of classroom-based learning, demonstrations, and practical training session

 

Certification

 

Entry Requirements

 

Progression

With experience and training, deckhands can go on to become mates or skippers on fishing vessels.

 

Employment Opportunities

Work as a deckhand on a fishing boat, other roles within the seafood sector

 

Assessment

Assessment by written exams and practical demonstration

STCW – PST Personal Survival Techniques

STCW – EFA  Elementary  First Aid

STCW – Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities

GMDSS – Short Range Radio Certificate
