Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM), the Seafood Development Agency would like to congratulate and recognise the phenomenal accolades bestowed on Island Seafoods at the recent Green Awards in the Double Tree Hilton Hotel, Dublin on the 8th April.
Island Seafoods not only won the ‘Green Seafood Business Award’ sponsored by BIM but they also beat off strong competition from blue chip companies such as Coca Cola, Glanbia, Dairygold and a range of high technology companies to win the overall ‘Green Business of the Year’ award.
BIM have assisted Island Seafoods to reduce their running costs as Donal Buckley, BIM’s Business Development & Innovation Director explains; ‘Island Seafoods took part in our Green Seafood Business Programme and they were a pleasure to work with as they already had a strong green company policy in place. They are worthy recipients for the Green Seafood Business Award but to win the overall Green Business Award is not only a great result for Island Seafoods but for the overall Irish seafood sector. Island Seafoods Ltd. is a family owned and run seafood business in the port of Killybegs, Co.Donegal. They have for many years been part of the green movement implementing changes throughout their facilities to make it greener and sustainable including a hydroelectric power plant that generates 65% of the company’s electricity. A proud member of Bord Bia’s Origin Green initiative they have listed further electricity reduction, water reduction and community interaction as their key goals for the next 5 years.
Michael O’Donnell, Business Development Manager of Island Seafoods explains how their focus on the environment is benefiting their business; ‘We realised early on that a commitment to the local environment is paramount to the long term success of the business. With the addition of a hydroelectric power plant, we save 350 tonnes of greenhouse gases per year. The assistance and advice we received through BIM’s Green Seafood Business Programme on green technologies helped us to improve efficiencies throughout our plant. We are constantly striving to reduce our carbon footprint and we are now investigating the possibility of building a wind generated power plant in the near future that would make us completely independent from the electricity power grid. We are over the moon with the recognition we have received from the Green Awards. We certainly were not expecting to receive the overall award so we are absolutely thrilled’
