At the launch, Tara McCarthy, BIM’s CEO took part in a panel discussion, Chaired by Carolan Lennon, open eir Managing Director and including Isabel O’Donovan – Owner, Issie’s Handmade Chocolates and Cllr. Pat Murphy, Cork County Council, to discuss the benefits of this new broadband capability on local businesses including the region’s most valuable seafood industry as Ms McCarthy explains;
‘Castletownbere is one of our key fishing ports landing over €113 million worth of seafood last year. In addition we have thriving seafood processors, retailers and fish and shellfish farmers that make up the fabric of this coastal community and as the Seafood Development Agency, we welcome the roll out of an improved broadband capability that will be an essential tool to improve efficiences and customer service for our seafood enterprises. BIM’s National Fisheries College in Castletownbere attracts and trains new entrants to this industry and upskills our seafood industry personnel in a range of areas from Skippers tickets to marine engineering to aquaculture training. High speed broadband will further improve our capability in the college to deliver exceptional standards of training and it will allow us to communicate more effectively with our students’
BIM’s National Fisheries College provides an extensive programme of training to the Irish Seafood Sector under the expert tutelage of the Principal Captain Shane Begley and his expert training team. The school was chosen as the venue to update a wide range of local stakeholders on the availability of high speed broadband in the county. According to eir, 178,500 homes and businesses across 101 communities in the county, can currently avail of high speed broadband. The company plans to complete the roll out of the programme in 2018 which will result in over 208,000 homes and businesses across 143 communities having access to high speed broadband.
