Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM), the Seafood Development Agency, is proud to support the 60th International Galway Oyster Festival taking place this year from the 25th – 27th September.

Irish oysters are considered a premium product on our international markets achieving €10 million worth of exports up to June this year with total exports expected to reach €26 million by year end. BIM is working with the sector providing a range of financial, technical and advisory support programmes to ensure Irish oyster producers are best placed to capitalise on the growing demand for Irish native and rock oysters.

Sought after by well-known celebrity chefs such as Richard Corrigan and Rick Stein, Irish oysters are one of the stars of BIM’s ‘Taste the Atlantic – a Seafood Journey’ trail launched recently in conjunction with Failte Ireland. The Galway Oyster Festival is the perfect opportunity to promote the excellent seafood available on this unique seafood trail. Initially focusing on the ‘Bay Coast’ region of the Wild Atlantic Way stretching from Erris, Co, Mayo to Connemara and on to Galway Bay, ‘Taste the Atlantic – a Seafood Journey’ will give visitors to Ireland and indeed Irish consumers, a real appreciation for the quality of Irish seafood available in this region and a key understanding of how Irish seafood is caught or farmed.

Included on the trail are restaurants that source their seafood from the following renowned seafood producers and fishermen including Galway Oyster Festival supplier Kelly’s Oysters. Kelly’s Oysters are an integral part of the festival every year and they will promote the ‘Taste the Atlantic – a Seafood Journey’ as they showcase their top quality oysters to the crowds of visitors that will descend on Galway over the weekend.

Also included on the trail are producers Connemara Smokehouse, Croagh Patrick Seafoods, Killary Fjord Shellfish, Keem Bay Fish, Marty’s Mussels and fishermen Gerry Sweeney and Gerard Hassett. To get an insight into the trail and the amazing producers involved as well as the breath-taking scenery, watch our promotional video.
