BIM takes visitors to Carlingford Oyster Festival under the sea in virtual reality

Visitors to Carlingford Oyster Festival got a chance to plunge underwater using virtual reality technologies to see how oysters and other seafood are being sustainably farmed around the coast of Ireland this weekend ( 10-12^th August, 2019).The Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) developed Aquaculture Remote Classroom (ARC) made its debut at the three day festival in Co Louth. The mobile classroom, designed to promote greater understanding of aquaculture, forms part of the wider Farmed in the EU campaign and is funded under the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund.

Máirtín Walsh, BIM explained how the ARC was launched earlier this year and has been touring the country visiting national schools and seafood festivals. He said:

“The seafood industry is the lifeblood of so many of our rural coastal communities.  Yet, if you were to ask someone to explain how oysters are farmed or even to explain what aquaculture means, they are quite likely to draw a blank. The ARC aims to bridge that gap in understanding and uses interactive technologies to bring footage taken on oyster and other fish farms to life.”
