Fifth class pupils of Scoil Naomh Molaise, Grange, Co. Sligo have been experiencing the world of aquaculture by taking virtual tours of some of Ireland’s oyster, mussel, and salmon farms during a visit from BIM’s Aquaculture Remote Classroom (ARC) this month (Wednesday 4 December, 2024). The ARC is a purpose built mobile classroom designed to increase understanding about aquaculture and how seafood is sustainably farmed in Ireland. A team of up to  three trained class facilitators deliver the interactive educational programme for primary and second level schools, including highlighting career opportunities within the sector. The ARC school tour of 2024 is soon coming to a close after visiting more than 3,200 pupils in schools in Ireland this year.

Máirtín Walsh, BIM, referred to how most people have at least a basic understanding of agriculture or farming on land, however, fewer people are aware that we also farm plants and animals in the water stating,

“Despite being an island nation with a seafood industry employing more than 8,000 adults directly, with almost one in four of those working aquaculture, there’s a lack of awareness about how seafood is farmed among the public. The ARC is helping to bridge that gap in understanding providing information to younger audiences through practical and fun class activities, and using technologies like VR allowing pupils to better grasp how seafood is sustainably farmed by virtually plunging underwater to tour some of our oyster, mussel, and salmon farms as well as using other interactive learning tools including map reading exercises, puzzles and quizzes.”

Launched in 2019, and supported by the European Maritime Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund, BIM’s ARC has delivered classes to 44,015 people to date, visiting schools, festivals and other events.

Camilla Harvey, fifth class teacher at Scoil Naomh Molaise commented on the reactions of the class during the ARC visit:

The pupils have enjoyed it immensely. Its visit follows on from the Seashore Explorers we did last year at our local Streedagh beach. This ties in nicely as it’s another opportunity to learn about fish and the various things that happen in the ocean...the new environment alone has peaked their interest, and the interactivity, technology and VR systems are all a hit with them.’

Ms Harvey added that the topics covered during the ARC lesson link to the curriculum.

“ It’s great to see it covered all in one day rather than spread out throughout the year, it’s done in a very fun and engaging way.”

BIM’s ARC visits to schools are free of charge, however, advance booking is essential. Visit BIM.ie for details.
