Programme Information

Who is the Programme for

  • Anyone interested in pursuing a career in the Irish aquaculture sector as a commercial diver.
  • Anyone already working in the aquaculture industry as a diver who do not hold a commercial diving qualification.
  • Anyone working in aquaculture who is interested in expanding their skill-set/experience.
  • Divers currently holding a Commercial Scuba qualification are eligible to progress to the Surface Supplied diving course.

5 weeks full-time

Training Methodology

The course starts with the basics of Surface Supplied diving equipment, dive panels operations, emergency procedures, search and rescue, in-water decompression, surface decompression using O2, decompression chamber preparation and maintenance.

The underwater work section of the course includes the use of cutting and burning equipment, air-lifts, rigging, lifting bags and video camera operation.

What Qualification/Certification will I receive?

QQI Level 6, 15 Credit, Special Purpose Award in Surface Supplied Inshore Diving Operations.

QQI Award is recognised by the UK HSE.

Entry Requirements

  • A Commercial Scuba Diver certificate.
  • The ability to swim 200m.
  • Commercial Divers medical completed by an approved Doctor.
  • Numeracy and Marlins test for seafarers where English is not their first language.
  • National powerboat certificate or equivalent.
  • SKL-FAR First-Aid Responder.

Progression and Employment Opportunities

Prepare divers for working inshore as a commercial diver.

Divers with a Surface Supplied qualification can work on all aquaculture works as well as inshore civil engineering projects, construction works, maintenance, rigging and anywhere divers are required.

With experience and training, commercial divers can continue their career within the aquaculture industry.
