Richard Branagan from Balbriggan, Co. Dublin and Aidan O’Callaghan from Schull, Co. Cork were recently awarded €50,000 each under BIM’s ‘Special Assistance for Young Fishermen’ Scheme.

Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Mr Simon Coveney, T.D. wished both fishermen well on their new venture; ‘It is encouraging to see young fishermen establishing their own businesses in the sector and I am delighted that this scheme, administered by BIM, can assist young fishermen to get up and running and purchase their own fishing vessel. The scheme which is provided under the Fleet Development Measure of the National Development Plan (NDP) 2007-2013 is intended to encourage new entrants into the fishing industry. Qualifying fishermen must not have owned a vessel previously; have at least five years experience working on a fishing vessel and must be under 40 years of age. Successful applicants will receive grant-aid of 15% towards acquisition costs or an amount not exceeding €50,000.
