Programme Overview Programme Overview

This one day course aims to provide training for candidates requiring STCW Updated Training in Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting in accordance with Section. A-VI/1 of the STCW Code. On successful completion of the programme, the learner will receive an STCW Certificate of Updated Training in Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting.  Classroom theory in fire awareness, fire fighting, the control of fire fighting teams, co-ordination of search and fire fighting teams in practical BA exercises.

Training Methodology

Classroom based theory in fire awareness and practical exercises in firefighting, hose, and BA work.

Certification

On successful completion of the course the student is awarded a STCW Certificate of Updated training in Fire Prevention and Firefighting in accordance with Section A-VI/1 of the STCW Code. The certificate is issued by BIM on behalf of the Department of Transport.

Entry Requirements

  • Must hold the STCW Certificate of Proficiency in Fire Prevention and Firefighting (3 day).
  • Photographic Identification must be provided prior to commencement of the course, e.g. Drivers licence or Passport.
  • Either a Doctors certificate to say they are fit to undertake the course or a valid Seafarers Medical Certificate ENG11.

Fire Fighting training activities consist of the following, which are carried out under supervision and with students wearing appropriate personal protection equipment (PPE) and wearing breathing apparatus.

Fire Fighting drills include:

1. students are exposed to heat and live fire scenarios using breathing apparatus
2. students climb up and down ladders and through crawl spaces
3. students are exposed to confined spaces

All students will be asked to sign a health declaration on commencement of the course.

Assessment

Student assessment will be based on participation in practical modules as required. The student will complete practical assessments and a written exam.
