Programme Overview Programme Overview

Learn essential skills from experienced trainers which include basic net mending, rope work, stability, chartwork, care of the catch, sustainability, food safety and marine engine operations.

An introduction to these skills will allow you to successfully start your career as a deckhand in the fishing industry. A range of sector certificates will also be obtained during the course on successful completion.

Duration

Training Methodology

Combination of classroom-based learning, demonstrations, and practical training session

Certification

  • Deckhand Foundation Course (Certificate of Completion)
  • STCW Certificate in: 
    • Personal Survival Techniques 
    • Elementary First Aid 
    • Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities 
    • Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting 
  • Issued with a BIM Safety Card 
  • GMDSS Short Range Radio Certificate issued by the Department of Transport
  • Introduction to Fish Handling and Knife Skills (Attendance Certificate)
  • Induction Food Safety Training Program level 1 (Attendance Certificate)
  • Introduction to Sustainability & Environmental Management Awareness (Attendance Certificate)

Entry Requirements

  • At least 16 years of age 
  • Not in full time education
  • Genuine interest in pursuing a career in fishing 
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Working knowledge of the English language
  • Holds a valid medical certificate (ENG11)

Progression

With experience and training, deckhands can go on to become mates or skippers on fishing vessels.

Employment Opportunities

Work as a deckhand on a fishing boat, other roles within the seafood sector

Assessment

Assessment by written exams and practical demonstration

STCW – PST Personal Survival Techniques

STCW – EFA  Elementary  First Aid

STCW – Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities

GMDSS – Short Range Radio Certificate
