Bottom Grown Mussel Consultative Forum

Overview Overview

In 2007, DAFM, DAERA and the Loughs Agency commissioned an all-island review of the bottom grown mussel sector with the aim of producing a set of recommendations for the future management of the sector.  The review was undertaken by Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) and produced the official report “The Rising Tide”. Since then, DAFM, DAERA, and the Loughs Agency have progressed a number of recommendations contained in the Report including the establishment of an All-Island Bottom Grown Mussel Consultative Forum (BGMCF). The Forum is chaired by BIM who also provide the secretariat and facilitates discussion between,  and recommendations by stakeholders, including industry, their representative bodies, and regulators on matters of mutual interest.

The Review required that ‘Industry membership to the forum will be on a bay-by-bay basis, with elected members being invited to attend from Cromane, Waterford/Wexford, Carlingford/Dundrum, Belfast/Larne, Foyle and Swilly.’

The SFPA, Marine Institute, AFBI and IFA aquaculture also sit on the forum.
