New financial support for inshore fishers provided under €258 million EMFAF

Inshore fishing vessel owners can receive up to €5,000 by participating in surveys conducted by Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) that will help shape future support for the inshore fishing fleet. 

The Inshore Fisheries Economic Assessment Scheme is among several funding supports available for the Irish fisheries sector under the €258.4 million European Maritime Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund 2021-27 (EMFAF) secured by the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue TD. 

Welcoming the Minister’s announcement, BIM CEO Caroline Bocquel said the survey information will help build a comprehensive assessment of the inshore fishing sector.  

“BIM will work closely with eligible vessel owners to gather important data that will be used to shape our services for the inshore fishing sector,” Ms Bocquel said. 

“The surveys will gather data on key areas including market and economic factors such as fish prices, market access and chains; social and institutional factors such as transport and logistics, credit and financial services; socio-economic and demographic data; and technological and innovative practices. 

“This new detailed information, along with the previous 2023 inshore census data, will provide valuable information to ensure that supports and services are being focused in the areas where they will be most effective, and help inshore fishers navigate challenges, setting them up for future success.” 

Under the scheme, a total of €3,500 will be available to vessels under 8m in length, and a total of €5,000 to vessels between 8 and 17.99m in length. The initial instalment will be €2,000 for eligible vessels on the completion of the first survey with the remaining balance on completion of the second. 

“Payments will be made to vessel owners to encourage them to help us gather this important data” said Ms Bocquel. 

“BIM representatives are available to provide further information on the scheme and help eligible vessel owners to complete the surveys.”
