BIM’s v-notching scheme, supporting the conservation of lobsters, reopened on 1 April. Owners of fishing vessels less than or equal to 15 metres are eligible to apply.
Last year’s scheme saw 47,000 lobsters, the highest on record, with a weight of over 31 tonnes v-notched and returned to sea to breed at nearly 80 locations around the coast. These lobsters will produce over 277 million lobster larvae to maintain the population in their first year after v-notching.
Almost 230 fishers participated with a total of €568,000 in grant aid being awarded.
