Skippers and Crew

We offer a range of courses for those who have chosen a career in fisheries. This highly practical training in a range of navigation and safety skills will aid those whose ambition is to become a skipper or second hand of a commercial fishing vessel.

Crew members can hold positions of navigational watch onboard a fishing vessel by gaining the following Certificates of Competency:

Pilot Deckhand Foundation Programme

Learn essential skills to successfully start your career as a deckhand in the fishing industry from experienced trainers, including former skippers and mariners and obtain industry relevant qualifications

Next course scheduled:

  • 03 February - 13 March 2020 (Six-week programme)

Qualification:

  • STCW Certificate in Personal Survival Techniques, Elementary First Aid, Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities and Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting
  • Issued with a BIM Safety Card
  • GMDSS Short Range Radio Certificate issued by Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport

Duration: 6 weeks full-time study

Course cost: no fee for Pilot programme (EMFF grant aid available for subsistence)

Who is the programme for?

  • School-leavers and/or those with an interest in pursuing a career in the fishing industry
  • Experienced deckhand who have no formal qualifications

Skipper Full Certificate of Competency

Qualification: Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport (Fishing Vessel) Certificate of Competency are issued following successful completion of training, sea service, written and oral examinations.
Duration: 14 weeks full-time study
Course cost: €200.00 (plus €130.00 written exam fee)

Course content includes:

  • Navigation 1 and 2
  • Ship Construction and Stability
  • Meteorology and Oceanography
  • Collision Regulations
