We offer a range of fish welfare workshops that give you an overview the importance of good fish welfare practices and husbandry and increase your knowledge in diagnostic and sampling methods for optimal assessment of fish health and disease in aquaculture facilities.

Participants will be given an overview of fish welfare and husbandry and the importance of good fish welfare practices relevant to their duties.

Overview

These recognised one - day fish welfare workshops (Fresh Water and Seawater) are designed to equip the learner with the knowledge and competence in fish welfare practice and handling techniques to meet 3rd party standards requirements.

Freshwater Fish Welfare Workshop (Full day)

  • Galway: Wednesday, 30 October - GMIT Galway Campus, Dublin Road, Galway

Who should attend?

The workshops are open to individuals who wish to enhance their knowledge of fish welfare in the finfish aquaculture sector. It will be of interest to new entrants or as a refresher for fresh water site and marine site staff working directly with and involved in the handling, transferring and harvesting of fish.

Course Tutors

The workshops will be delivered by Veterinary Surgeons from Fish Vet Group.

Fish Welfare Classroom & Practical Half Day Workshops

Next courses scheduled during October and November

The aim of the workshop is to increase knowledge and proficiency in diagnostic and sampling methods for optimal assessment of fish health and disease in aquaculture facilities.

Overview

The practical workshops are tailored to either the freshwater or seawater sector and will cover the following:

  • Anaesthesia (theory and practice)
  • Clinical examination and necropsy of fish for disease recognition
  • Fresh microscopy and parasitology
  • Diagnostic tests (theory and practical sampling techniques to include histology)
  • virology
  • PCR
  • blood sampling and bacteriology

  • Castletownbere: Wednesday, 6 November - BIM National Fisheries College, Castletownbere, Co Cork
  • Greencastle: Wednesday, 20 November - BIM National Fisheries College, Greencastle, Co Donegal

Freshwater Fish Welfare Workshop & Practical (Half day)

  • Galway: Wednesday, 30 October - GMIT Galway Campus, Dublin Road, Galway

Who should attend?

The practical workshops are appropriate for any staff working directly with fish health and welfare practice on fish farm sites. Attendance of one of the classroom workshops prior to the practical workshop might be of benefit for those interested in a refresher on relevant fish diseases, anatomy and physiology.
