Project aim
Reduce the environmental impact and operating costs of seafood processing.
Our methods
We arranged an on-site visit by the Clean Technology Centre where:
- a preliminary check for water leaks was undertaken and the leaks repaired
- we installed an on-line water meter to provide live meter readings that could be monitored remotely. We then used these readings to detect any remaining leaks.

Our first profile shows water use on Saturday May 15 and Sunday May 16, 2011 when there was no processing on site (highlighted on sample graph). We found and repaired a number of small leaks and a faulty ball-cock.

A subsequent profile (May 29 - 30, 2011) shows a marked improvement but there was still water use - traced to a small leak in an ice making machine.

In the final profile (June 30-31, 2011) improvements made are evident. There is now no water usage over the weekend when the site is not in operation.
Seeing the benefits
Our estimates show that in discovering and repairing these small leaks Atlantis Seafood saved between €3,000 and €5,000 annually. In recognition of their hard work the company was a finalist in the Small Firms Association National Business Awards 2012.
Next steps
Atlantis Seafoods is making further improvements to their water consumption, which promise even more savings. The areas identified for improvement include the:
- cleaning stage which accounts for about 38% of water usage
- production process, especially high-use refrigeration coolant systems
