Local fishmermen have worked together with BIM to address the marine litter issue in an attempt to decrease the levels of marine debris and further enhance Dingle’s status as a popular tourist destination. The announcement comes as the European ‘Our Ocean’ conference begins in Malta, with one of the key themes discussing marine litter.

South West Fisheries Local Action Group supports Bantry Blueway

Munster’s first ever Blueway was launched earlier this week (11th August) in Bantry . The Bantry Blueway will take paddlers on a 2km, 6km or 9km water trail in the picturesque Bantry Harbour in West Cork and encompasses up to seven different points, starting at Abbey Slipway and taking in Whiddy Island before moving across to Reenbeg Point and back via Railway Pier.

Coveney Hosts First Ever National Inshore Fisheries Forum - A New Era for Inshore Fishermen

The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Simon Coveney T.D. today hosted the first meeting of the National Inshore Fisheries Forum (NIFF), bringing together for the first time a network of representatives from the six recently established Regional Inshore Fisheries Forums. The inshore sector (comprising fishing boats of less than 12 metres in overall length) make up more than 80% of the fishing fleet and are predominately active within six nautical miles of the Irish shore.

The five finalists in the BIM Young Fishmonger 2015 Competition took part in the final judging stage today (12th November, 2014) with a practical skills test in BIM’s Seafood Development Centre, Clonakilty, Co. Cork. Each finalist had to as to demonstrate excellent knife skills by filleting and preparing a range of fish and shellfish under strict time constraints. In addition to testing their knife skills, the finalists will be interviewed on their business plans.

BIM Host Green Resource Efficiency Seminar for Seafood Retailers

BIM recently hosted a free,half-dayseminar in the Radisson Blu Hotel, Dublin Airport on Tuesday the 14th October to assist Seafood Retailers to explore smart and inexpensive methods of reducing energy, water and transport costs. Expert talks were delivered by SEAI (Key Tips for Saving Energy Costs) and Ecofleet who advised attendees on how to save money and operate a fuel-efficient commercial vehicle fleet. BIM also introduced their Green Seafood Business Programme which aims to deliver resource efficiency improvements and reduce operating costs for seafood businesses.

There are six FLAG’s established in coastal regions around Ireland.

BIM's Seafood Development Centre Extends Network to Killybegs and Letterkenny

Signing the MoU

Today (Thursday 12 December 2013), BIM’s Seafood Development Centre (SDC) signed a memorandum of understanding with Letterkenny Institute of Technology (LYIT).  The agreement means that the innovative services offered by the Seafood Development Centre, based in Clonakilty, Co. Cork will now be offered to seafood companies from the Institute’s campuses in Letterkenny and Killybegs.  This is a valuable outreach function, making the services of the Seafood Development Centre more accessible to seafood companies in the North West.  In addition, the agreement aims to address the current deficit of graduates from third level taking up roles within the Irish seafood sector through a ‘Seafood Graduate Scheme’.

Young Fishmonger of the Year Announced by Seafood Development Agency, BIM

BIM, the Seafood Development Agency today (Monday 25th November 2013) announced that the 2014 Young Fishmonger of the Year as James Kirwan of East Coast Seafood in Naas, Co. Kildare.  James was selected as the overall winner from a shortlist of five finalists, all of whom exhibited a dynamic and innovative approach to seafood retailing, coupled with an outstanding knowledge of seafood. Senator Feargal Quinn was the guest speaker at today’s event in Dublin, where he congratulated all the finalists, commending their passion for the business.

Cross-border Irish mussels limber up with MSC label

The blue mussel sectors in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland supported by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development NI, and the Department of Agriculture Food and Marine have been Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified as a sustainable and well-managed fishery. Subject to chain of custody traceability certification, mussels from the fishery are now eligible to bear the MSC’s blue ecolabel.

BIM to Facilitate Industry to Improve Scale and Profitability in the Whitefish Sector

Following an initial debate around the difficulties fishermen were experiencing in selling their fish,  BIM has instigated a number of industry meetings to address the current issues between fishermen and processors. The latest meeting attended by seafood processors, producer organisations and fishermen was held in BIM’s offices in Clonakilty on the 8th January. Discussions between both parties immediately identified that poor communication between Irish fishermen and processors has led to a lack of supply and quality in the whitefish sector.

Investor Interest in Galway Bay Organic Salmon Farm heightens as latest figures show major market growth globally

Twenty-one financiers, spanning three continents have now registered firm interest in the €60 million investment for the proposed deep sea organic salmon farm in Galway Bay.  Bord Iascaigh Mhara, the Irish seafood development agency, has applied for a licence for the development, which could create 500 jobs in the local area and generate a wage flow of €14.5 million per annum.  The licence application is to farm up to 15,000 tonnes of organic salmon, a product for which Ireland is world-renowned and currently unable to satisfy demand.

BIM welcomes beginning of Eight week Public Consultation period in application for Deep Sea Salmon Farm licence

The public consultation period officially begins today (Monday 15th October 2012) in the licence application process for a deep sea fish farm in outer Galway Bay.  The consultation period will run for eight weeks, during which time any member of the public may make observations or comments to the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Mr. Simon Coveney, T.D.  The closing date for submissions to the Minister is midnight on the 12th of December 2012.

BIM Lobster V-Notching Demos Attract Large Crowds at Dalkey Lobster Festival

BIM's John Hickey shows spectators the eggs visible on the underside of a female lobster.The recent Dalkey Lobster Festival held from the 24th – 26th August was a resounding success with the picturesque village attracting great crowds to sample the fantastic lobster and local seafood on offer. There was also great interest and craic at the Dalkey Masterchef competition with Dalkey local Pat Kenny joining Gerald Kean, Lucinda O’Sullivan and Tom Doorley to judge the final.

Over 140 new jobs to be created as Coveney announces €15.5 million in new investment in seafood processing industry

Simon Coveney, T.D. Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine today announced €15.5 million of new investment by the Irish seafood processing companies, supported by grants of €3.2 million under the EU co-funded Seafood Processing Business Investment Scheme. These investments by 21 companies are projected to generate over 142 additional jobs and increased sales of value added seafood products of nearly €44 million by 2015. The companies are based in Wexford, Dublin, Cork, Donegal, Galway, Louth and Kerry.

Deckhand Graduates 2012 Six Deckhand trainees were presented with their Certificates after completing the FETAC Level 5 Commercial Fishing course at the BIM National Fisheries College in Greencastle, Co Donegal recently. During the course, the students completed 8 FETAC Modules over a six month period covering all aspects of Commercial Fishing including Fishing Gear Maintenance & Repair, Marine Engineer Operations, Safety at Sea, Fishing Vessel Operations, Care of the Catch, Communications, Information Technology, Computer Applications, Navigation and Stability together with all the mandatory safety courses.

Minister for the Marine Simon Coveney welcomes six of the most influential French fishing organisations, representing over 850 vessels in a bid to increase French seafood landings for processing into Ireland.  BIM estimates that for every vessel landing into Ireland for processing, 5 new jobs will be created.

Joint Campaign to Urge Fishermen to Wear Lifejackets announced by Marine Minister Coveney

BIM, the seafood development agency, Irish Water Safety, the statutory body established to promote water safety and the RNLI have joined forces to create an ongoing campaign to highlight the importance of wearing a lifejacket for fishermen.  The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Simon Coveney, T.D. officially unveiled the series of initiatives today (Thursday 23 June 2011) onboard a fishing vessel in Howth Harbour.  The promotional awareness campaign will take place over the coming months and will involve targeted radio advertising, an online communications campaign and a safety team of specially trained BIM staff who will liaise directly with fishermen on the ground to encourage the use of lifejackets and also the correct wearing, care and maintenance of them.  To date in 2011, five fishermen have lost their lives at sea.
