BIM's Lobster V-notching Conservation Scheme Returns Over 30,000 Lobsters to Sea

The latest figures from Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) indicate 31,500 female lobsters were returned to sea in 2015 to breed as part of the Lobster V-notching Conservation Scheme. This is over double the number of female lobsters that were returned to sea in 2010.

Irish oysters are considered a premium product on our international markets achieving €10 million worth of exports up to June this year with total exports expected to reach €26 million by year end.

The North East Fisheries Local Action Group (FLAG), established by Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM), the Irish Sea Fisheries Board, is proud to support a new Coastal Heritage Trail in the picturesque fishing village of Clogherhead, Co. Louth. Developed and recently launched by the Clogherhead Development Group (CDG), the trail includes a series of information and directional signs detailing the rich heritage and the breath-taking walks in the area which are sure to attract more visitors to the region.

South West Fisheries Local Action Group supports Bantry Blueway

Munster’s first ever Blueway was launched earlier this week (11th August) in Bantry . The Bantry Blueway will take paddlers on a 2km, 6km or 9km water trail in the picturesque Bantry Harbour in West Cork and encompasses up to seven different points, starting at Abbey Slipway and taking in Whiddy Island before moving across to Reenbeg Point and back via Railway Pier.

Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) can confirm that full ice production will resume at its plants in Kilmore Quay, Howth and Dunmore East this afternoon (7th August). There was no interruption to supply of ice to fishermen at any of the three plants nor was there a risk to public safety at any stage in the last week.

Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) welcomes the publication today, for public consultation, of the Draft National Strategic Plan for Sustainable Aquaculture Development by the Department of Agriculture, Food & the Marine. In particular BIM welcomes the draft report’s primary objective, to sustainably grow the annual production of the aquaculture industry from the current level of approximately 37,000 tonnes by a further 45,000 tonnes by 2023. The Report outlines twenty-four specific actions in total which represent positive initiatives for the development and growth of the sector.

Coveney Hosts First Ever National Inshore Fisheries Forum - A New Era for Inshore Fishermen

The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Simon Coveney T.D. today hosted the first meeting of the National Inshore Fisheries Forum (NIFF), bringing together for the first time a network of representatives from the six recently established Regional Inshore Fisheries Forums. The inshore sector (comprising fishing boats of less than 12 metres in overall length) make up more than 80% of the fishing fleet and are predominately active within six nautical miles of the Irish shore.

The five finalists in the BIM Young Fishmonger 2015 Competition took part in the final judging stage today (12th November, 2014) with a practical skills test in BIM’s Seafood Development Centre, Clonakilty, Co. Cork. Each finalist had to as to demonstrate excellent knife skills by filleting and preparing a range of fish and shellfish under strict time constraints. In addition to testing their knife skills, the finalists will be interviewed on their business plans.
